Cobham open in new years fashion against the Cranes

MERLEY COBHAM SPORTS 8—1 CRANBORNE

Merley started strongly, going 1 – 0 up against bottom-of-the-table Cranborne through Matt Groves after five minutes, and they kept up the pressure. Wave after wave of attacks followed, with the Cranborne keeper pulling off some superb saves to keep his side in range of an equaliser. With half time looming, Cranborne themselves forced two excellent stops from Aaron Drayton in the Merley goal, before managing to level the game up after catching Merley on the break, with Sam Wrixon scoring for the visitors. Merley started the second half well, but it wasn’t until the hour mark that they got themselves back in front, with Groves again the scorer for Merley. Groves didn’t wait long before completing his hat trick only five minutes later. With Merley’s passing game now tearing Cranborne open, more goals followed in quick succession, two from Asa Phillips and one from Josh Pickering, who’s cheeky chip over the keeper found itself into the goal with ten minutes to go. In-form Groves slotted home his fourth of the day and Merley’s seventh, before Lee Wilkins finished the rout with Merley’s final goal in injury time.
